Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Botox is a nerve toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and it has been safely used since 1980 for medicinal purposes in healthcare. However, in 2002, Botulinum Toxin Type A was FDA approved for cosmetic purposes. Shortly after its approval in 2006, it was considered the most popular cosmetic procedure worldwide.
Botulinum Toxin works by blocking nerve signals to injected muscles, temporarily inactivating movement and preventing wrinkles from appearing and worsening. Common areas where anti-wrinkle injections are used include frown lines, around eye lines (crows feet), laugh lines, nose lines, forehead lines and other wrinkles called dynamic lines.
Botulinum Toxin has also been shown to be effective when treating underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis) and reducing migraine headaches, and more.
This treatment can be performed in only a few minutes and the effects can last up to 4 months or longer. The treatment is safe, quick and usually painless. How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes 15-30 minutes in total. There will always be 30 minutes allocated to the appointment time to ensure a complete medical history and consultation has taken place, as well as enough time for clinic before and after photos to be taken.
What about downtime, side effects and risks?
Downtime varies from person to person, however, as a general rule, you may experience slight swelling and tenderness at the injection sites. Bruising is rare however, we do advise it’s not always avoidable. Majority of the inflammation will disappear as quickly as 1-3 hours following your procedure.
It is very important to remain upright and to avoid facials, massages or head down procedures for at least 4 hours. Exercise should also be avoided for the next 24 hours.
How long does it last?
Botox is documented to last up to 12 weeks. We advise first time patients that they will need to return for a treatment “review” to ensure the correct dosage has been applied. Your second and subsequent time you will not need to return for a review. Many patients return 3-4 times a year for their treatments, however if you were to completely cease botox treatment, your muscles would return to normal strength 3-6 months following the last treatment.
